Away from the heat and the frenzy, I’ve been checking out You Tube videos, living vicariously through the experiences of friends, and just feeling nostalgic (SAUDADE!) for Brazilian Carnaval.
I spent last year’s Carnaval in Recife/ Olinda, and blogged about it here.
Here are some short You Tube clips on this year’s Carnaval, complete with textures, beats, and sights that only a home-made video can capture. The only thing missing is the feeling of a swig of ice cold Skol beer under the hot, tropical sun.

(check out 1.29 for the ‘Barraka Obama,’ or Obama liquor stand)
Musicians practicing the traditional tune for Carnaval, the Cerola of Olinda.
Dancers & Musicians spend about 6 months preparing for Carnaval
The results! Here’s the tune on the streets
And, of course, no Recifan Carnaval is complete without the frenetic Frevo dance
Old and young alike
Back to dreaming about the tropics….
